Solidaridad- unity, compactness, togetherness, camaraderie, shared goals...
UP publications have a big role in informing, molding, and raising the awareness of students on issues and campaigns concerning the university and the country. UP publications have been exemplary in participating in historical campaigns for the advancement of student rights and welfare, social transformation, and seeking out the truth. They are instrumental in upholding campus press freedom, and are looked upon by other schools as such.
Campus and social issues directly affect the UP community, and without accurate and truthful information that a publication can provide, students will be incapacitated in addressing these issues. However, many colleges remain without student publications that will serve as their voice and source of information. There is a lack of correspondence between colleges and different UP units, resulting in the sparseness of comprehension of the different issues that affect the different student constituencies.
SOLIDARIDAD was conceived to address the need for a broad and dynamic alliance of student publications and writers’ organizations that will serve as a center for advancing campus press freedom, a coordinating network for the exchange of information, and as a campaign center advancing the rights and welfare of the students and the people, along with raising their social awareness in order to respond to various issues and to struggle for social transformation.
SOLIDARIDAD as promoter of social transformation through campus press freedom and the advancement of students’ and people’s rights and interests.
It shall strive to unite all UP publications in the advancement of the rights and interests of the students and the people. It will be a coordinating network that will mobilize the students and the people on specific campus and social issues.
It can only do this if there is campus press freedom. Hence SOLIDARIDAD will be a beacon that will uphold campus press freedom. It shall strive to maintain the independence and initiative of student publications. It shall initiate activities whereby its members can exchange ideas and stories of the situation of campus writers in the different colleges and units.
SOLIDARIDAD as active campaign, grievance and information center.
SOLIDARIDAD can serve as an active campaign, grievance, and information center that will coordinate news from the different publications in order to increase awareness on campus and social issues. It will serve as a network of campus publications and campus writers and will provide venues for the exchange of information.
SOLIDARIDAD as technical and professional support group among campus writers.
It will actively campaign for the opening of campus publications, an activity that only a unified and persevering studentry can do. It aims to provide technical support to publications in need, extend assistance and services in campus paper management, lay-out facilities and other publication needs. It will conduct publication orientations and seminars in order that member publications be more equipped in pursuing the truth for the students and the people and unite with them on common issues. It shall strive for the overall betterment of member publications. It will promote understanding and cooperation among members and other organizations and individuals with the same goals.
SOLIDARIDAD will recognize social reality in writing modes beyond the journalistic. It will promote the sublimity of creative writing and the soul of imagination. It will attempt to confront social texts through avenues literal or otherwise.
SOLIDARIDAD will pave the way to a bright future of unified writers striving for social change. It may well be a historical step that other schools will look upon as a model that the writers of the Iskolar ng Bayan have courageously undertaken. Unity, freedom --- SOLIDARIDAD.
